A treasure trove of chewy information

Okay, now this just has to be useful. The Social Issues Research Centre has published a timeline of dietary advice.

Where else can you read that in 1861, the cookbook Christianity in the Kitchen warned that pie crust made with butter or lard was both indigestible and un-Christian?

Or that it was once considered wise to fear fruit?

(“What’s that? OMG an apricot! And I think it’s begun to roll this way. Run! Run!”)

(Dontcha just miss the 19th Century?)

  1. How often it seems that today’s “latest wisdom” becomes tomorrow’s laughingstock. And not just in terms of dietary advice (although that is a very “ripe” example!) (Sorry.)

I predict that much of the global warming theory will be debunked in 10-20 years, along with the ozone depletion scare and other current sacred cows.

We’ll see. I could be wrong. I’ve been wrong before. (Ya think?)

  2. A future post, here, John, will describe a “diet” that incorporates every shred of current dietary advice. I’m not sure exactly what it will look like, save that it will most certainly be inedible :-)

    LOL!

  4. How about each time I read your blog, I just keep reading until I hit a “laugh out loud,” and then I will let you know where it occured. Okay, Kirsten? Thanks for the laugh! BTW, some smiling, grinning and nodding did occur previous to this point, but this was the first LOL during this session!
