Skunk!

I happened to look up from my desk a few minutes ago and saw a skunk heading across the street into my lawn!

I grabbed my camera and dashed out the front door. It had snowed last night, so I was able to tell from his tracks where he had headed — up my driveway. I caught up with him next to my garage — I yelped at him, and he whirled around and lifted his tail :-)

I repeated that several times, grabbing shots. Unfortunately, none was a killer pic, but here’s the best of the lot.

  1. I closed in on him to about 10 feet!

We’ve got some really funny skunk stories in my family. Hopefully my dad will blog one of them now. My sister, otoh, will probably need to be bribed to tell hers, since she was actually, er, “perfumed” by one.

  2. Thanks for the good skunk info (not info on a good skunk, but good info… well, you get the idea) that came around in Jean’s email. And keep the sardines handy. Keep that critter on the west side! (We got nailed twice last year!)

  3. Thanks, Mike — I was wrong in one thing, though — it’s not likely that this skunk was a female with kits, this time of year — up this far north the kits don’t come until later. So, more likely, it’s a single out looking for food. Crazy as our winter weather has been, you can’t blame the skunks for being a little confused!
