{"id":563,"date":"2006-07-16T20:14:54","date_gmt":"2006-07-17T01:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kirstenmortensen.com\/index.php\/?p=563"},"modified":"2020-01-01T22:56:31","modified_gmt":"2020-01-02T03:56:31","slug":"hover-flies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kirstenmortensen.com\/index.php\/hover-flies\/","title":{"rendered":"Hover flies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day my daughter and I noticed a small, slug-like caterpillar-y thing eating aphids that had infested a wild lettuce plant.<\/p>\n<p>I looked around a bit tonight online and ID&#8217;d the critter: it was a syrphid fly larva.<\/p>\n<p>Syrphid flies, also called hover flies or flower flies, are pretty ubiquitous insects in the summertime, so you&#8217;ve probably seen them. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hoverfly\">Many have coloring similar to bees (yellow and black stripes)<\/a> although they don&#8217;t sting, and they are (usually) much smaller than a honeybee. They&#8217;re called hover flies because they can hover in place in the air.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uky.edu\/Ag\/CritterFiles\/casefile\/insects\/flies\/syrphid\/syrphid.htm\">Here&#8217;s a great site on syrphid flies<\/a> including how to tell whether a bee-like insect is really a bee, or a fly in bee&#8217;s clothing.<\/p>\n<p>I knew syrphid flies were a beneficial insect from my organic gardening days, but I&#8217;d never seen a larva in action before. Pretty cool.
