Poor Taylor. Her mother got her a PR job at Diptych Corporation, and she’s definitely in over her head . . .<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cTaylor.\u201d Basil wet his lips. \u201cWe should probably get together right after this. Are you free?\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood. Meet me in my office. We have a lot to do. If you need lunch, we\u2019ll order up from the cafeteria. I don\u2019t usually eat lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u00a0 nodded again.<\/p>\n

The meeting dragged on.<\/p>\n

Taylor\u2019s notepad filled with scribbles. Hire photographer for press kit photos, check with corporate communications on list of press contacts, check with corporate communications on list of analysts, tradeshow back wall\/customer quotes? She smiled at everyone and nodded her head until her neck ached. Fake it fake it fake it.<\/p>\n

Finally it was over.<\/p>\n

Everybody stood up.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee you in a few minutes,\u201d Basil reminded her as they were leaving.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She turned toward her cubicle.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, protest girl.\u201d It was Miles. He\u2019d caught up with her and was speaking now just above a whisper, his lips close to her ear. \u201cBlow him off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t blow him off. You heard Darryl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. Darryl\u2019s an idiot, too. But I\u2019m telling you. Baz is going to dump his entire job onto you. He\u2019s a lazy f**k and he\u2019s spotted a sucker. That would be you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks, you\u2019re a gem yourself. What are you even doing here? I didn\u2019t think anarchists stooped to working for multi-national corporations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t a job, it\u2019s an infiltration.\u201d He grinned at her. Ouch. He was very cute. His eyes were hazel in the middle and brown around the edges, and his hair curled out at the tops of his ears.<\/p>\n

She looked away.<\/p>\n

They were at her cubicle. She stepped inside and hesitated. She should be doing something, getting something, but what was there to get? Maybe . . . another pen.<\/p>\n

Miles stood at the cubicle entrance, watching, seeing too much.<\/p>\n

Taylor rounded her desk and opened the top drawer.<\/p>\n

Miles stood aside to let her back out into the aisle. Aisle. Really a passageway, a beige fabric alley formed by the walls of her neighbor\u2019s cubes.<\/p>\n

She hesitated again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat way,\u201d Miles pointed. \u201cTurn left at the copier.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. And don\u2019t say I didn\u2019t warn you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She went on to meet her fate . . .<\/p>\n
