{"id":1068,"date":"2009-04-24T15:41:37","date_gmt":"2009-04-24T20:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kirstenmortensen.com\/index.php\/?p=1068"},"modified":"2020-01-03T19:05:51","modified_gmt":"2020-01-04T00:05:51","slug":"pileated-woodpecker-in-my-backyard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kirstenmortensen.com\/index.php\/pileated-woodpecker-in-my-backyard\/","title":{"rendered":"Pileated Woodpecker in my backyard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1070\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" title=\"pileated-woodpecker4\" src=\"http:\/\/kirstenmortensen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/pileated-woodpecker4.jpg\" alt=\"pileated-woodpecker4\" width=\"250\" height=\"298\" \/>Okay, excuse me while I flip out &#8212; but I can count on one hand the number of times I&#8217;ve seen one of these guys &#8212; then this afternoon, didn&#8217;t I walk out my back door and see a Pileated Woodpecker working the bark of a tree, right here in the &#8216;burbs!<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve never seen one &#8212; you know right away it&#8217;s a Pileated because they&#8217;re BIG. Crow size.\u00a0 Of course, if you can get a close enough look you will also see the &#8220;woody woodpecker&#8221; red crest like shows up in this pic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1071\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" title=\"pileated-woodpecker3\" src=\"http:\/\/kirstenmortensen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/pileated-woodpecker3.jpg\" alt=\"pileated-woodpecker3\" width=\"278\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kirstenmortensen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/pileated-woodpecker3.jpg 278w, https:\/\/kirstenmortensen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/pileated-woodpecker3-259x300.jpg 259w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I wish my pics had come out clearer. I actually got quite close, but he was on the shady side of the tree so the clarity isn&#8217;t the best . . .<\/p>\n<p>For most of the time I watched him, he was working one particular crack in the tree. This pic shows how they use their tails to brace themselves.\u00a0 He&#8217;s twisted his head around to try to work something out from under the bark. Must be there&#8217;s enough of the stuff he likes in Brighton . . .
