Voting with their pocketbooks

Right Side Redux has published the 1/31 FEC figures on the DNC’s financial situation, along with this comment:

RNC had 4 times as much money to begin with in December, received 3 times as much in donations, spent twice as much as the DNC and has 5 times as much cash on hand.

I’ll bet part of the Dem’s problem is that its leftist/activist constituents are contributing to 527s, like Moveon.org, draining away funds that would have once gone to the party itself.

I don’t think that’s money well spent, as per my (wordy) look at the Dem activist/centrist split here.

Not the least bit surprising–the party with control of the White House always has the monetary advantage–check out the final Clinton years. Not only doesn’t the WH party have to spend as much to get jobs done and people elected but all the President has to do is show up someplace and money rolls in.

I tried to find data on the Clinton years but the result of any google search with “Clinton” and “fundraising” in it is too clogged up with stories on all those 90′s scandals ;-)

This topic is nothing I want to dwell on, on my blog, in any case. I posted this entry because my hunch is that the 527s are taking money away from the DNC proper, mirroring the split in the policy priorities of the leftist & centrist elements of the Democratic Party, which I think is an intriguing premise. Once we’re looking back on it as history it will be clearer, I’m sure.
