The art of crop circles

Sunday, August 6th, 2006

From Wired, an article about the most visually sophisticated crop circle to date, including this quote from crop circle critic John Lundberg:

Lundberg agreed that the artistry of the Ashbury formation is exemplary. “I think any circle makers would be proud to create something like this. It’s a very accomplished and well-executed crop circle.”

Accomplished. Hmmmm.

Here’s a quote from another circle follower (expert? pundit?):

“Of late, the crop circles seem concerned with the moving of one dimension into another,” Steve Alexander said. “This is perhaps one of the most striking and overt expressions of that idea to date.”

When did this happen? Last I knew, crop circles were a hoax perpetrated to titillate UFO-watcher sorts. Now, we’re having thoughtful discussions about what circlers are expressing . . .

(Lundberg has a website on crop circles; click here to see pics of his top picks for 2006.)

North Korean Art

An article on opendemocracy.net by Jane Portal, who has written a book on the topic.

I wish the captions of the slideshow were more legible. I also wish it included more oil paintings; that first one is quite striking, in a Norman Rockwell kind of way, although of course NK artists can’t take a break from superreal sentimentality to paint things like this.
